Commander's Corner (10/23)

October 2, 2023

Dear Faithful and Respectable Alumni of Eta Zeta,

My name is Ty Lolley HZ 1397, and I am the current Commander for our Eta Zeta Chapter. I am writing this article to give you all an update on the great things that have been happening within our chapter since the last article in February.

Our Spring quarter was as busy as always! We started the quarter out the best way possible, with a brotherhood golf tournament. After renting out Jackson Parish Golf Course for the morning, 48 of our guys participated in a 4 man scramble. You will see below our makeshift trophy, made out of an old lamp, a rubber snake, a rusty wedge, & a can of gold spray paint; however, this trophy has become one of the most highly sought-after awards in the chapter!  And there’s no better way to end the day after a brotherhood golf tournament, than an afternoon golf-themed party!

A few weeks later, we got all our guys together and hosted a brotherhood crawfish boil. It’s amazing how fast over 300 pounds of crawfish can disappear! The next weekend, our chapter loaded up on a charter bus with their dates and headed down to Panama City Beach once again for Formal! Formal weekend never disappoints… except for the horrible sunburns! Once we got back from the beach, it was time for Seven Seas! There is no better way to end the school year than lining the backyard with bamboo, building a wooden ship, and renting a foam machine!

I hope those last two paragraphs made you reminisce about the crazy fun times you used to have in college; however, we are not a chapter that is only focused on having a good time. This past April, we hosted a raffle raising money for MedCamps of Louisiana. MedCamps is a summer camp experience for kids struggling with disabilities. Many of our members have dedicated their summers to serving as counselors for these kids, and MedCamps means a lot to the Eta Zeta Chapter. Through our raffle, we were able to raise over $12,000 to help MedCamps build accessibility ramps and improve their property for the upcoming summer!

In May, Louisiana Tech named Sigma Nu Greek Chapter of the Year. We were awarded this due to our excellence in philanthropy, academics (GPA 3.25), & brotherhood. Along with that, senior Graham Clary HZ 1351 was nominated for Greek Man of the Year, and junior Brennan Barber HZ 1388 won Greek Ambassador of the Year.

Our chapter started the 2023-2024 year strong with 84 gentlemen. At the end of September, we put on the best and most professional rush I have witnessed in my four years in Sigma Nu. With the strong work of our Rush Chairs JT Dixon HZ 1394, Adam Smith HZ 1429, & Dane Stearns HZ 1431, we are proud to welcome 55 new candidates to join our chapter! And while we believe in quality over quantity, we sure did get a lot more guys than everyone else on campus. We are excited to see what the pledge class of 2024 has to offer for Eta Zeta!

This upcoming year, we are making a push to reconnect with our alumni chapter. In my Commander’s speech at Rush, I mentioned, "Our alumni have created a definite level of success, a legacy that we strive to exceed daily.  A legacy that will not die.” Our goal is to meet and raise the bar that you all, the alumni, have set for us. In doing that, we would like to also create a stronger relationship between the active and alumni chapters. We ask that you please update your contact information on our website and that you join our Facebook page (link at the bottom) so that you can stay updated on the chapter’s progress throughout the year.

Below you will find a few photos as well as an EC directory.  Please reach out if any of us can ever be of assistance to you. We are looking forward to another great year!

Fraternally,

Ty Lolley, HZ 1397

Eta Zeta Commander
